There has been, as our Bibliography will indicate, a good deal of scholarly discussion on issues raised by the play, but there was nothing in the way of a lull commentary until Walter Stockert’s well-received work of 1983. Nor indeed did the text itself attract a great deal more attention overseas. Stace’s doctoral thesis on lines 1-586 (1971) was sadly never carried through to the end of the play. PREFACE In the last 140 years there have been just two complete commentaries on the Aulularia published in English, Wagner’s o f 18762 and Thomas’ of 1913.
